5 DIY Braided Hairstyles

On our last visit to Europe in the early Summer, it was pretty darn hot, so this year, I traveled prepared: tank tops, loose dresses, sandals, and an arsenal of cute updos to try.  (And by the way, the weather in Europe this time around was totally nutty – some days it was cold, some days it was crazy hot, and most evenings it rained – at least for an hour or two; so as you can imagine, updos were very necessary.)

5 braided DIY hair hairstyle tutorials _ glitterinc.com

1.  I’m tempted to try this pretty side french braid low updo hair tutorial (though I’ll admit, I’m still a bit intimidated) … loving the low-slung look of the braid — and Love Meagan even offers up a video to walk you through the process.

2.  I’m a huge fan of this pretzel braid tutorial featured on A Cup of Jo (created by her friend Caroline) – easy, holds tight, and keeps absolutely all of the hair up off of your face and neck for the hottest of Summer days.

3.  This double braid messy bun will likely be my go-to travel updo every time I travel – I love braiding up my long-ish bangs, especially when it’s hot, and the double braids here really gussy up the simple bun.

4.  Believe it or not, I have never attempted a fishtail braid, but I see so many pretty versions around, that I know this will be a must-try.  {Definitely following The Beauty Department’s fishtail braid video tutorial.}

5.  The boho crown braid tutorial that Brooke White (of The Girls With Glasses) created for Little Miss Momma is awesome.  I love that the boho crown works either as a full updo, or just a thin braided crown for a half-down look (perfect for those travel days when you want to look a bit more “done” but don’t want to break out the blow-dryer).

I’ll also by trying my hand at these head scarf tutorials while I’m overseas, because I love any excuse to play hair dress-up with a vintage scarf.

What are your go-to summer and travel “do’s”?

Summer Streaking

Nooo, not that kind of streaking. Color streaking, your hair. And after seeing these images of updos and braids with a peak of bright color hidden within a great hairstyle, I really really want one.

But, I’m a lawyer, part of the time, and I’m not sure a judge/clients/lawyers would “get” the whole purple hair streak thing, but, I’m wondering if I could either (a) tuck the colorful piece into an updo, or (b) go clip-on. For now, I’ll probably stick to faux colored extensions, but someday, probably when I’m eighty and crazy, I’m going neon streak crazy. Are you a fan or the streak trend? Would you try a funky streak just for Summer?

Be sure to check out my earlier post on tie-dyed or dip-dyed hair tips and how to achieve the look!

Stars In Her Hair

OB-sessed with these star hair clips featured on the models’ glossy coifs at the recent Rodarte show.  The hair artists used star hair accessories from Rodarte on some girls, and rows of bobby pins on others.   I’m dreaming in DIY.

The Long + Short of It: Hair

blonde-wavy-hair--long-hair-attachment-hair-cuts-_-glitterinc.com

My hair is an endless battle, and I suppose it’s like that for every woman. I have curly/wavy hair, which means I’m predisposed to desperately want straight hair.  My sister has the thickest, straightest hair – and she dreams in curls.  I call it the grass-is-always-greener effect.  I’ll go to great lengths to blow dry, iron, and chemically alter my hair to achieve “different” (in my case – stick straight), but one thing is for sure, I refuse to cut my hair.

I cut my hair twice (and when I say cut, I mean “more than a trim”) – once in my early teens, unaware of the power of the blow drier at this point, and once in late high school, because I had more guts back then.  Both times I donated the several inches of hair lost.  Today I argue with hairdressers to take no more than an inch, and even after the onslaught of scissors, and a scant pile of hair ends on the ground, I snivel all the way home. #DramaQueen

I’m never happy with a hair cut.  I always convince myself that it looked better before – with that extra brittle inch.  What’s wrong with me?

Are you crazy protective with your hair, or is it just me?

Hair Cuff

I’m loving the metallic hair cuffs popping up on high and low-slung ponytails everywhere!  My hair generally exists in two styles – long and straight or up in a ponytail.  The hair cuff gives me an excuse to rock the ponytail more often = win!

Plus, the neat hair slides are an easy DIY – a.k.a. my favorite kind. Simply head to your local home improvement center and pick out your favorite plumbing rings and pipes, choose your metal – the pipes usually come in gold and brass colors, then ask for a piece cut between one and three inches – depending on the size you’re looking for.  Voila – DIY hair cuff!

To wear the plumbing cuff, simply twist your ponytail in order to slide the ring up to the base of the head.  If you’re worried about keeping the ring put, use an everyday elastic beneath the ring so that the ring rests on the elastic, giving it better staying power.

And if the idea of hunting through the aisles of a home improvement store gives you the willies, check out this gorgeous honeycomb-printed hair cuff here and these more affordable options at Free People: the cutout ponytail cuff and the stingray ponytail cuff.

Head Scarves

I’ve always believed that girls who wore head scarves just pulled off chic.  I’ve worn head scarves over dirty hair to much guffawing from the peanut gallery (a.k.a. stupid brothers) who tell me I look like the chiquita banana lady.  Hey, at least she’s famous.

Also, the vintage vibe is irresistable.  So I continue to try (mostly in vain.)

And a twist on the headscarf …

And for a great turban how-to
