Stars In Her Hair

OB-sessed with these star hair clips featured on the models’ glossy coifs at the recent Rodarte show.  The hair artists used star hair accessories from Rodarte on some girls, and rows of bobby pins on others.   I’m dreaming in DIY.

The Long + Short of It: Hair

My hair is an endless battle, and I suppose it’s like that for every woman. I have curly/wavy hair, which means I’m predisposed to desperately want straight hair.  My sister has the thickest, straightest hair – and she dreams in curls.  I call it the grass-is-always-greener effect.  I’ll go to great lengths to blow dry, iron, and chemically alter my hair to achieve “different” (in my case – stick straight), but one thing is for sure, I refuse to cut my hair.

I cut my hair twice (and when I say cut, I mean “more than a trim”) – once in my early teens, unaware of the power of the blow drier at this point, and once in late high school, because I had more guts back then.  Both times I donated the several inches of hair lost.  Today I argue with hairdressers to take no more than an inch, and even after the onslaught of scissors, and a scant pile of hair ends on the ground, I snivel all the way home. #DramaQueen

I’m never happy with a hair cut.  I always convince myself that it looked better before – with that extra brittle inch.  What’s wrong with me?

Are you crazy protective with your hair, or is it just me?

Hair Cuff

I’m loving the metallic hair cuffs popping up on high and low-slung ponytails everywhere!  My hair generally exists in two styles – long and straight or up in a ponytail.  The hair cuff gives me an excuse to rock the ponytail more often = win!

Plus, the neat hair slides are an easy DIY – a.k.a. my favorite kind. Simply head to your local home improvement center and pick out your favorite plumbing rings and pipes, choose your metal – the pipes usually come in gold and brass colors, then ask for a piece cut between one and three inches – depending on the size you’re looking for.  Voila – DIY hair cuff!

To wear the plumbing cuff, simply twist your ponytail in order to slide the ring up to the base of the head.  If you’re worried about keeping the ring put, use an everyday elastic beneath the ring so that the ring rests on the elastic, giving it better staying power.

And if the idea of hunting through the aisles of a home improvement store gives you the willies, check out this gorgeous honeycomb-printed hair cuff here and these more affordable options at Free People: the cutout ponytail cuff and the stingray ponytail cuff.

Head Scarves

I’ve always believed that girls who wore head scarves just pulled off chic.  I’ve worn head scarves over dirty hair to much guffawing from the peanut gallery (a.k.a. stupid brothers) who tell me I look like the chiquita banana lady.  Hey, at least she’s famous.

Also, the vintage vibe is irresistable.  So I continue to try (mostly in vain.)

And a twist on the headscarf …

And for a great turban how-to

Hair Bow

I’m totally obsessed.  I believe it’s the five-year-old in me.  The trend has stuck and I can’t get enough.  Back in high school we wore ribbons in our hair to pep rallies and such, and trust me, at fifteen, I thought I looked the height of chic with my craft store ribbons.  Nowadays, still wanting to pretend I’m on the dance team (barring requisites of talent to get in … and age-appropriateness), these grown-up versions of the girly bow have my heart aflutter.

Tie-Dyed Hair Tips

I have been obsessing over Lauren Conrad’s cotton candy frosted tips since she posted a picture of the dipped hair on her new beauty blog, thebeautydepartment.  Just a few days before the big reveal, the reality starlet polled her readers and asked whether she should leave the tie-dyed tips to the “rebelling teens,” or to give the color trend a shot.  Sixty percent suggested L.C. go for it, and voila – the most covet-worthy hair trend I’ve seen in a while.

If you are totally panicked about dyeing your tresses in all colors of the rainbow, try a bold colored extension.  Models at Prabal Gurung’s latest fashion show had their extensions individually hand-dyed by stylist, Didier Malige, but you can get the same effect on the cheap and easy by buying pre-colored extensions at your local beauty supply store.

And if you’re ready to rebel, Elle Girl has an awesome dip-dyed hair how-to.  Check it:

What you’ll need: Hair bleach, developer, gloves, brush, foil, dye

{Color Brilliance Powder Lightener, $3; Sensitive Scalp Ion Developer, $2; Manic Panic Hair Dye, $9; Hair Dye Brush, $1}

Steps to Complete the Look:

1. Mix hair bleach and developer in a plastic bowl until you get an icy-like consistency.

2. Section out your hair; keep first section on top of head with a clip.

3. Split the bottom section in 1/2 and apply bleach to desire ends up to your desire length. Feather the brush towards the top and cover completely.

4. Apply foil (yes, you can steal the foil in your kitchen) to each section of hair, take bottom half of your hair down and do the same.

5. Heat ends with a blow dryer and check each section to make sure they are fully saturated.

6. Remove foils and rinse over the sink.

7. Put your desired hair color into a plastic cup and apply generously! This is the time to have some fun.

8. Wrap colored hair in plastic bag and apply heat, the longer it holds, the better the color keeps.

9. Let hair cool for 5 minutes.

10. Rinse ends with condition and smile at your sick new hair in the mirror!

Glam Bobby Pins

Perhaps it’s the 4 year old girl in me or it’s my obsessive compulsive refusal to have that telltale strip of hair-bang-mutation fall into my face all day, but I am such a fan of bobby pins.  It doesn’t take much to thrill me.  I don’t even go for the $3 and up versions, I’m a 99 cent pack of Goody bobby pins purchaser.  But today I will admit, I have fallen for $15 bobby pins.  It’s not my fault Jane Tran‘s designs are so fab.

Beach Hair Sans Beach

A la I Love Wildfox:  A little how-to on beach hair ends that Nina Lucas (of Lucas Salon in Echo Park) gave to Kimberley of Wildfox Couture.  If you wind each strand of hair around the bobby pin tightly and flatten it in your hair iron, you get major crimped hair.  It’s as simple as that!

Death Defying Hair

{image a la we heart it}

My fifteen minutes of interest in Brazilian Blowouts has died a swift death.  California is taking serious strides to ban Brazilian Blowouts after testing two samples of the brand’s Smoothing Serum.  The superior court of California has filed a proposed preliminary injunction against the makers of Brazilian Blowout, GIB LLC, after approximately 8% formaldehyde was found in the recipe, the typical ratio found in embalming fluid used by funeral homes.  A hazard alert has been issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration under the Department of Labor warning stylists and consumers of the serious health risks posed by the product.   (WWD)

I’m sticking with my trusted straightening iron.

Ombré Hair

You had your first run-in with half-dyed hair a few months after you and your three best friends used your friend’s mom’s Sun In, laid in the sun for an hour, decided it wasn’t working, doused your hair once again, baked a little longer, and then showed up the morning after the slumber party decidedly believing that your mom wouldn’t notice your now orange hair.  That was thirteen, this is now.

And now ombré hair is actually a style.  A look achieved with salon assistance.  A look Rachel Bilson, Ashlee Simpson, Drew Barrymore, Jessica Biel, Hilary Duff, and runway models rock effortlessly.  A look we should try?

{images a la pinterest}

Of course, you could always just skip a few months worth of salon visits and call your overgrown roots “ombré”.  Now that’s budget chic.
