I Made You A Mixtape

{images a la pinterest}

Hand-holding was awkward, being dropped off at the movie theater for your date – more awkward, but when he made you a mix tape – that was love. Because I live a soundtracked life (more on that here), and because I am a product of the 80s, every Wednesday I’ll make you a mix tape. Who says chivalry is dead? You’re welcome.

This week I’m getting a little funky with the mixtape and adding a video element (yeah, 21st century!)

Ob-sessed with this cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know”, by Walk Off the Earth.  The entire band shares and plays one guitar throughout the song.  So cool.

I saw Lady Gaga live last year and I was blown away.  She’s an incredibly talented performer + also, she’s completely nuts.  My kind of show.

I actually got the chance to watch Radiohead perform live this week in Miami and it was awesome! Thom Yorke performs like a maniac, throwing his whole body into it.  … makes me think my dancing is not so bad after all.

Incubus puts on one of my favorite shows ever.  And Brandon Boyd rarely wears clothing.

F.A.S.H.I.O.N.

Every time I type the word “FASHION”, I hear David Bowie.  Am I the only one?

On that note, this week’s musical Wednesday is an homage, and mini portfolio to the FASHION ( … turn to the left) that’s inspiring me right now.

{If you miss my mixtapes, I’ll have a shiny new one for you next week, but until then – just press play.}

Today I thought I’d bring you a fun sampling of my Shazam finds.  What is Shazam, you ask?  It’s this crazy app on my iphone that allows the program to listen to a short clip of a song, and then it spits out the name, artist, album, etc.  I have become so obsessive about identifying songs, that I will silence people in restaurants, department stores, during movies, and of course – my own car.  (By the way, random but true, Marshalls plays great music!)  Back to Shazam – it’s basically a life saver when you have the song name on the tip of your tongue.  Also, please don’t make fun of my embarrassing shazam discoveries.

If I Ever Fall In Love, Shai

Conventional Wisdom, Built to Spill

To Be With You, Mr. Big

The Ice Is Getting Thinner, Death Cab for Cutie

Listen to your Heart, Roxette

Come Back to Bed, John Mayer

Be Be Your Love, Rachael Yamagata

Sparks, Coldplay

Sure Thing, Miguel

No More I Love Yous, Annie Lennix

Solsbury Hill, Peter Gabriel

Life’s Been Good, Joe Walsh

I endured an 8-hour round-trip car ride listening to nonstop NPR.  Don’t get me wrong, I heart NPR, in comfortable “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” spurts.  Thus the need for blasting girly-ness.  Don’t judge.

… or rather, I borrowed you a mixtape, from Zooey Deschanel (who gave it to NY Mag), who is awesome.

According to the incomparable Deschanel, “Happiness songs are, like, my area.”

1. “Rudy, a Message to You,” by Dandy Livingstone (the original 1967 ska version, long before the Specials made it a hit)
2. “Let’s Dance,” by Chris Montez, 1962
3. “Magnet,” by NRBQ, 1972
4. “Funny Funny,” by Sweet, 1971
5. “She’d Rather Be With Me,” by the Turtles, 1967
6. “Pushover,” by Etta James, 1963
7. “Be True to Your School,” by the Beach Boys, 1963
8. “Georgy Girl,” by the Seekers, 1966
9. “Yes We Can,” by Lee Dorsey, 1970
10. “Wonderful! Wonderful!,” by the Tymes, 1963
11. “Darlin’,” by the Paper Dolls, 1968 (a Beach Boys cover)
12. “Love Comes to Everyone,” by George Harrison, 1979
13. “After Hours,” by the Velvet Underground, featuring Maureen Tucker, 1969 (the song Lou Reed reportedly said was too innocent and pure for him to butcher)
