Friday Link Love
![]()
I’m sure everyone missed the last two Friday link fests fiercely, but I was on vacation, and full of pie, and therefore did the bare minimum. Forgive me?
Speaking of pie, my new Maine obsession – raspberry pie.
Is it weird that I want the team at Confetti System to come into my home and decorate every room with fringe, pom poms, and metallic pinatas? I have an obsession.
Also, is it strange that I am completely terrified of Sam Edelman’s collection of spike-covered-shoes? I coveted, and then I ran. Those shoes kicked my butt. I tried on the Sam Edelman Lorissa pumps and Renzo booties at Bloomingdale’s recently – within seconds of wearing the spiked footwear I was putting holes in my ankles. Shoes = 1, Lexi = 3 puncture wounds behind. I am never one to shy away from pain in footwear; beauty is pain. But 5-inch heels wielding spike bouquets – pass. I’m afraid, I’m very afraid.
I plan on staying twelve forever. Some women cut a few years off of their age at each birthday, but not me, I’m sticking with twelve. Either my wishful thinking will stick or people will think I’m delusional. At least their first thought won’t be – no way, she’s at least (fill-in-the-blank) … crazy is much better. Oh right, glitter bracelets. Fierce. And age-appropriate.
Did I mention it’s almost my birthday?

Sweet On Candy Bars
On my wedding to-do list, one thing I knew I had to have – a self serve candy bar. All the best bar mitzvahs had a candy bar, and I was ready to re-live the glory for my big day. I even had a wedding stamp made and patiently stamped hundreds of penny candy brown paper bags with our wedding logo. We went a tad overboard and had such massive jars of penny candies, we decided to open the candy bar early, setting up shop on rehearsal night and leaving the candy out through the weekend (destination weddings simplify that.) A giant self service buffet of candy is pretty much my ideal, and both kids and adults munched on candy all weekend long.
The hubby and I are planning a house warming party to celebrate our new home (as soon as I get to the other 37 vital things on my list), and I will undoubtedly have a candy bar. Only this time, I might get extra ambitious and hand-make all of the candies. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not. (Bonus points if you know the origin of that ridiculous quote.)

Cookies On A Line
This is just too awesome not to share. If you dream in cookies, and you live in San Francisco, cookies may be falling from the sky in your hood. San Francisco entrepreneurs Eve, Kathleen and Clem of Fat Cookies deliver their oven-fresh cookies (baked in their second story apartment) to their customers below by way of a bag and string hoist. Sadly, the Fat Cookies operation was shut down by the SFPD due to a lack of proper permits. Damn the man, save the Empire.
But don’t fret – follow @eatfatcookies on Twitter to find out where they’re baking next. And with clever facebook status updates such as “whether PERMITting, we’ll be back!”, I’d say these cookie entrepreneurs will be up and running in no time.”

The Anatomy of a Cupcake
And my obsession with cupcakes continues. How great is this print (the image is actually a fine art photographic print on matte paper) titled The Anatomy of a Cupcake?

Sweets On A Stick: Pie & Cake Pops
Lollipops are sooo last season. The hottest sweets at weddings and events –> cake pops (and my personal faves – pie pops … yes, pie pops).
Okay seriously, how does the pie stay on the stick? I can’t even keep pie on a fork. These bakers are clearly defying aerodynamics.

Cookie-Stuffed-Cookies
Blame Diana at Express-O for introducing us all to these ridiculous cookie cookies. This calorie-free number is an Oreo-stuffed chocolate chip cookie. (And there are other versions – some stuffed with Girl Scout cookies! Run. No seriously, run away from the cookies and/or run on the treadmill while consuming. The latter is the far more clever alternative.)
Am I threatening the space-time continuum by suggesting double stuffed Oreos stuffed into the cookie dough?
Check out the full recipe at Serious Eats.

Consumer Warning, from the Chef: These cookies are a little bit … INTENSE. If you think about it, each one is basically a THREE-COOKIE MASHUP. As my friend Helen Rosner said when I blabbed about these on Facebook, “We made some last week and basically immediately acquired diabetes and died.” Have a shot of insulin at the ready.

Julia Chid on Valentine’s Cards
“Valentine cards had become a tradition of ours, born of the fact that we could never get ourselves organized in time to send out Christmas cards.” – Julia Child, My Life in France.

Whoopie Pie Wars
Because our wedding was in Maine, and because like any good Mainer (with a Florida driver’s license) we gave whoopie pies and cartons of milk as favors (one of many many favors – me = overboard), I couldn’t resist reporting on the current Whoopie Pie woes at issue in Maine.
Maine’s legislators are up in arms over the sweet treats. Some Maine law makers are proposing to adopt the frosting-filled cake sandwich as Maine’s official state dessert. Sweet, right? Not so, says State Representative, Donald Pilon, who claims the snack is little more than a “frosting delivery vehicle,” according to The Boston Globe. And this is bad, because?
“At a time when 31.3 per cent of Maine’s children are considered overweight or obese, do we want to glorify a dessert that lists lard as its primary ingredient?” Pilon said, suggesting a “healthier” alternative would be to adopt wild blueberry pie.
Yeah, you know, because PIE is totally good for you.
Leave whoopie alone!
And in case you’re interested in making whoopie … without lard (note to self: this just keeps getting worse), check out this awesomely awesome recipe for whoopie pies – both traditional and just off the beaten path.
